Customer Service Phone Trees as Modern Torture

Call any major company's customer service line. Go ahead, I'll wait. Actually, I'll wait 45 minutes, because that's how long you'll be on hold.

First, the phone tree. 'Press 1 for English.' Okay. 'Press 2 for existing customers.' Fine. 'Press 3 for technical support.' Sure. 'Press 4 for billing questions.' That's me.

'Your call is important to us. Please hold while we connect you to the next available representative.' Translation: 'Your call is not important enough to staff adequately.'

Hold music plays. Not good music. Not even bad music. Aggressively mediocre music interrupted every 30 seconds by 'Your call is important to us.'

After 30 minutes, the music stops. Hope surges. Maybe a human! No. 'For faster service, please visit our website.' If the website worked, I wouldn't be calling.

Finally, a human. 'Let me pull up your account.' (5 minute pause) 'I see you need billing support. Let me transfer you.' NO. PLEASE. 'Please hold.'

New hold music. New queue. Another 20 minutes. When someone finally helps you, it takes 3 minutes to solve the problem.

Total time: 1 hour. Actual problem-solving time: 3 minutes. This is why people are angry. Stop testing our patience and just answer the phone.
